1800 "Emmet's Rebellion" - a haphazard plot for Irish independence -- fails in Ireland. Robert Emmet is hung and Hugh Toland Sr., Hugo Black's maternal great grandfather, and others flee to America.

1817 George Walker Black, Hugo's paternal grandfather, is born in Georgia.
1848 Martha Ardellah Toland, Hugo's mother, is born in Laurens County, South Carolina; Hugo's father, William Lafayette Black, is born in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
1861 Columbus Black, Lafayette's older brother and Della Toland's sweetheart, joins the Confederate Army in Auburn after the American Civil War breaks out.
1863
1863 Columbus Black dies at the Battle of Gettysburg.
1868 Fayette Black marries Della Toland at her father's home in newly formed Clay County, Alabama.
1870 Robert Lee, first child of Fayette and Della Black, is born in Harlan, Alabama.
