1921 Black defends United Mine Workers union in massive strike; Black marries Josephine Foster in Birmingham and defends the killer of Father James Coyle.
1923 Black joins Birmingham's Robert E. Lee chapter of the Ku Klux Klan. Black become the state's leader against Alabama's convict leasing system.

1926
1924 As specially appointed assistant US attorney general, Black prosecutes Mobile whiskey dealers, including future Congressman Frank Boykin.

Black argues his first case before the US Supreme Court --- on behalf of one of Alabama's convict miners.

Oscar Underwood loses his final attempt to win the Democratic nomination for President.
1925 Black announces as candidate for US Senate and resigns from Klan.
1926 Black is elected by a plurality vote as Alabama's US Senator.
