1902
1901 Alabama ratifies new Constitution that disfranchise many poor whites and almost all African Americans.
1902 Pelham, one of Hugo's older brothers, dies in a drunken accident.
1903 Hugo attends Birmingham medical school and works with his brother, Dr. Orlando Black.
1904 Hugo attends the University of Alabama law school in Tuscaloosa.
1905 Hugo's mother, Della Black, dies.

1906
1906 Hugo graduates from law school and sets up practice in Ashland.
1907 Hugo's law office burns in fire destroying Clay county courthouse. Black moves to Birmingham.
1908 Black helps defend black and white striking miners; Black and Barney Whatley realize childhood dream of practicing law together.
1909 US Steel purchases major steel plants in Birmingham.
1910 Whatley moves to Colorado for health reasons. David J. David buys his interest in the law firm of Black and Whatley.
