1901 | Alabama ratifies new Constitution that disfranchise many poor whites and almost all African Americans. |

| 1903 | Hugo attends Birmingham medical school and works with his brother, Dr. Orlando Black. | |
| 1904 | Hugo attends the University of Alabama law school in Tuscaloosa. | |
| 1905 | Hugo's mother, Della Black, dies. | |

1906 | Hugo graduates from law school and sets up practice in Ashland. |
| 1907 | Hugo's law office burns in fire destroying Clay county courthouse. Black moves to Birmingham. | |

| 1909 | US Steel purchases major steel plants in Birmingham. | |
