Lafayette Hugo Black is born. A few days earlier a sister, "Little Della" is buried. |

Farmers in Harlan area become active against local Democrats, including Fayette Black; Hugo sees his first steam locomotive in Alex City. |

Fayette Black moves family to Ashland, county seat, to become W. L. Black, merchant. |

Hugo attends school at Ashland Academy; Clay County farmers have organized the local Populist party. |
| 1894 |
William Oates, the first candidate for governor to campaign in Clay County, is elected as the nominee of the Democratic and Conservative Party of Alabama. |

Merit Black, one of Hugo's older brothers, dies. |

Joseph Forney Johnston is elected Alabama's governor as an "unconservative" Democrat. |

W.L. Black thumbs his nose at Baptist Church, which earlier expelled him. |

Populist Wilburn Whatley is elected Clay County Probate Judge. |
| 1900 |
W. L. Black, Hugo's father, dies. Hugo changes the order of his name to become "Hugo L. Black". |
